Spam Plant

Alex Dragulescu, a clever man if ever I saw one, has performed a near-miracle. He has taken the torrent of unadulterated swill generated by spammers and turned it into something beautiful.

Go and visit his gallery of Spam Plants to see what I mean, and make sure you take a look at some of his other inspiring work too.

Gargoyl #2

Another gargoyle from Sydney University (they’re made from sandstone, if you were wondering).

A few years back, two of the gargoyles from the university appeared for sale on eBay. The seller claimed that they had been legally removed due to superficial damage. I was skeptical but I bid on them anyway.

The reserve was not met and he removed the auction.

I like to think that not long after, the gargoyles came to life and devoured him.

A Gargoyle

If I leave my house and head east, in about ten minutes of walking I come to the grounds of Sydney University. It’s a pretty big campus, but the best part by far is the old building that makes up the original uni.

It’s decorated with hundreds of stone gargoyles. I’ve photographed many of them, and I thought I might post a few of them here for you to see from time to time.

Watercolour Prowler

Hey team: you can now go and see the final Prowler lovingly finished in glorious watercolour over at Bearskin Rug. Kevin has managed to render every last creepy detail perfectly. Say hi to him while you’re there (Kevin, that is, not the Prowler. Don’t talk to the Prowler. It will turn out badly).

I knew that Prowler was going to be trouble. Now that he’s back, he’s brought all his friends…

Click on the pix for bigger versions. If you dare.

The Prowler

One of my daily blog reads is illustrator Kevin Cornell’s wonderful Bearskin Rug*. In a recent post about childhood monsters, Kevin asked for readers’ memories of the things that went bump in the night and I mentioned my fear of the dreaded Prowler. Imagine my quivering horror to find that today’s Bearskin Rug features an uncannily accurate rendering of something I thought I had left far behind in the mists of the past.

Gee, thanks Kevin.

Whimper.

Can I open my eyes now…?

*You should be reading Bearskin Rug every day too – it’s not always as scary as this. Sometimes, but not always.
