I’ve got my dad’s really old bible with some neat pictures in it. I’ll see if I can’t find some neat pictures to send you.
I will say one thing for old bibles, there’s tons of neat educational material, not even biblical stuff. For example…
Granted, yes, it’s tied to the bible through virtue of being in biblical settings, but it’s not bad. There’s even a science section, and a decent one (for being 130 years old now, mind).

Yes, best to make the horizontal dimension of the embedded pic around 400 – 500px, otherwise you need to define it in the html (which you can’t do with the embed code as you’ve discovered)

Looking at the picture, I got to wondering exactly what kindness is supposed to be depicted therein.
#63 and #78 are my best guesses.
I mean, What’s he doing for the lame man, other than just allowing him to be there?
Well, my reading is that he’s gesturing offscreen as if to indicate that the kindness lies elsewhere. Out the back, as it were. The inherent humour is, as you infer, that the supposed ‘kindness’ is not even evident.
I suppose if you know the story (which I don’t in this case) then it makes more sense. I’ll see if I can find out.
OK, so it turns out that the lame man has a name: Mephibosheth. The kindness that David shows him is actually a kind of ‘proxy’ kindness, as he’s doing it for Mephibosheth’s father, Jonathan. The kindness he does is to return all of Jonathan’s father, Saul’s, land and property to Mephibosheth, and allows him to dine at his table.
“So Mephibosheth dwelt in Jerusalem, for he ate continually at the king’s table. And he was lame in both his feet.
The woman in the background is probably Ziba, who was a servant in the house of Saul, and got bequeathed to Mephibosheth along with her family.
2 Samuel 9 if you care.
Kinda bizarre, since that passage about David hating lame and blind people that I quoted about halfway through is 2 Samuel 8!
Yeah, I guess it would have been quite challenging for an artist to capture those specific acts of kindness. I mean, how does one depict the guy dining at the king’s table AND convey that he’s lame? Maybe have his crutches — or, even better, a wooden leg — propping up one end of the table?
Prolly didn’t have a wooden leg. 2 Sam 9 says that he was ‘lame in his feet’. This is quite a peculiar affliction if you think about it, and sounds more like in-grown toenails to me.
That is indisputably true.
